The expectation was to open the open office documents always using the office client rather using office APP. We found that activating "Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" feature would solve this; though it worked but not 100 %, still the users were displayed with option to open VIA word online under document properties and the functionality just worked as expected.
Our expectation is to hide this option of opening VIA Word Online completely, here are the list of options available to achieve this;
Note : Disabling the users office online license still doesn’t help.
This is achievable by enabling IRM;
1. Activate Information Rights Management on Office 365 Tenant by navigating to Office 365 Admin Portal > Settings > Apps > Microsoft Azure Information Protection > Manage Microsoft Azure Information Protection settings > Click on Activate button:
2. Once its activated on Office 365, then we need to navigate to SharePoint Online Admin Center > Settings > Select “Use the IRM service specified in your configuration” under Information Rights Management (IRM) section and click Refresh IRM Settings (This may take a while for settings to replicate to SharePoint Online).
3. After this, we need to go to the Document Library where we need to restrict users from opening documents in browser and navigate to Library Settings > Information Rights Management > Check the “Restrict permissions on this library on download” box > Provide Permission Policy Title & Description > Next Click on Show Options > Under Set additional IRM library settings > Check the “Prevent opening documents in the browser for this Document Library” box.
4. Once this configuration is complete, if we now Click on the Callout option in Document Library for a Document I can see that the Open in Online option is removed.
